Instructions Following Whitening

The following are general guidelines after whitening, whether your teeth were whitened in-office or at home.

For the first 24 hours following whitening:

It is not uncommon for sensitivity to occur during this time period. It may be helpful to use toothpaste made for sensitive teeth or prescription fluoride gels to protect the teeth. Over the counter pain medication may also be used to alleviate the sensitivity.

For the first 48 Hours following whitening:

Teeth are more susceptible to staining. So, for the 48 hours after whitening, it is best to avoid dark-colored food or beverages that can stain your teeth. Any item that can stain your clothing, can also stain your teeth. Avoid berries, cola or other dark sodas, red wine, coffee, tea, tobacco, ketchup and soy or other dark sauces.

When using your custom whitening trays, follow the instructions given by our office. Place the whitening gel in the center of each tooth position on the tray, so that the gel rests against the front surfaces of the teeth once it is placed in your mouth. Avoid placing excessive amount of whitening gel to prevent spillage onto the gums. Wear your trays for the recommended amount of time. When you are done whitening, remove the trays and rinse your mouth. Gently remove any gel remaining on your teeth and inside of the trays with a soft bristle toothbrush. Keep your trays in a safe place by placing them in the proper container.
