Even with excellent care, however, teeth and gums can be susceptible to disease, infection, cavities, cracks, or other forms of damage. Restorative dentistry is the aspect of dentistry that helps maintain oral and overall health even when the health of one or more teeth or the surrounding areas is compromised. The goal of restorative dentistry is to restore the function and integrity of the tooth structure, function, and health, while maintaining a natural appearance.
Crown
A crown, which is also known as a “cap,” is a process which involves encasing the entire tooth structure. Preventatively, crown may be placed to protect a tooth from fracturing when there is insufficient amount of enamel or there is a large filling. It is also commonly placed after root canal treatment. On occasion, a crown is placed to mask a discolored tooth. Custom shading allows a crown to appear natural and blend in with your other teeth.
Dental Bridge
A bridge is a procedure which involves the replacement of a missing tooth by anchoring a false tooth to the adjacent teeth – in front and behind the missing area. Therefore, multiple teeth are involved in the process. One or more missing teeth can be replaced with a bridge. A bridge is permanently cemented and will allow you to function comfortably. Custom shading ensures that the bridge will appear as a natural part of your mouth.
Inlays and Onlay
A porcelain inlay or onlay is a type of a filling, which is used to rebuild a fractured tooth or to replace a large amalgam or silver filling. It is a conservative way for the dentist to preserve your remaining tooth without excessive removal of your enamel. It is tooth colored and custom made to only fit the tooth being treated. It is very durable and therefore commonly placed in molars. A custom shade is taken to ensure that the filling blends in with the rest of the tooth.
Implant Restorations
Implant dentistry is the latest in missing tooth replacement, which involves placement of a “post” or implant into the jawbone. Once the implant has been fused into the bone (four to six months), an implant crown is custom made to fit the implant. Unlike a bridge, implant does not involve the adjacent teeth and a safe method to replacing missing tooth.
Dentures
A denture is a replacement for multiple missing teeth within the same arch (upper or lower). A denture differs from a crown or bridge in that it does not rely on any existing tooth for support and relies on surrounding gums and bone
